This is shown in the second battle because Beowulf needs a sword and then in the final battle, he even needs the help of someone else. Eventually, fate leaves Beowulf so much that in the final battle the dragon wounds him mortally. If pride never overcome Beowulf, would he of been able to kill the dragon all by himself with his bare hands? Nobody will ever know.
