The Haudenosaunee, commonly known as the Iroquois or the "Five Civilized Tribes", were the first to develop democracy in the world. The Iroquois were primarily found in upstate New York, Canada, and Wisconsin surrounding the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence River.
