The secession of Deep South states and the firing at Fort Sumter prompted Abraham Lincoln to call for volunteers to suppress the rebellion and in reaction Jefferson Davis called on volunteers. soon sputtered to an end. In Alabama some 12,000 federal cavalry had raided the state and crushed Forrest's command while Mobile fell. Johnston surrendered to Sherman, while over 40,000 rebels in Alabama and Mississippi put down their muskets. While isolated garrisons surrendered, the last battle, fought in Texas, was a confederate victory. Davis was captured in Georgia trying to get to E.K. Smith's army, which surrendered, in New Orleans on May26th, ending the Civil War.
