Stereotyped Librarians in Movies What do you think of when you hear the word "librarian"? Several years ago 100 people were surveyed and asked what they thought of as the typical librarian. The results showed that most people thought librarians were quiet, mean, stern, single or unmarried, stuffy, and wore glasses. In most cases, librarians have proven to be sweet, fun-loving people. Hollywood created this negative connotation of librarians, which has been proved as a stereotype

Stereotypes exist everywhere in Hollywood. Movies tend to dramatize or exaggerate these stereotypes. They usually portray librarians with a mixture of judgmental attitudes, bookishness, and timidity. The stereotype is not unique to any particular era or genre. It has not changed much over time and many think that it will not vanish. Librarians will still be seen as prim, stuffy old maids rather than the sweet and young beautiful people they really are.
