From the documents read in class and the resources found outside of class, a common trend is present throughout a majority of the slave narratives. A number of the slaves felt that their "Masters" which was the title given to their owners, were actually the caring providers who ensured their prosperity and happiness.

you can see be this response in Samuels's interview, he was told that in his native land people eat people, and it is more dangerous and vile than it is in life on the plantation. Because Samuel was so naive and so heavily oppressed, he believed this statement and began to convince himself that this was a better life. Slaves like Samuel were commonly misled by their owners to again, keep them isolated and content.
