One of the most important issues in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is that of choice. Do the characters have the ability to choose what they want to do or are they simply destined to participate in death and destruction? There is ample evidence of both fate and free will in the play and the presence of both greatly affects the interpretation of the plot and the characters.
Fate, in the play, seems insurmountable.

decisions throughout the play also affected every aspect of their being. However, they could not have been made any other way because it is in their personality to make such choices. The emotions of the characters also affected the character's inability to make wise decisions in situations. This could not be avoided because emotion is something integral to the mind's decision-making process. Due to all these factors, Romeo and Juliet were doomed from the outset.
