Their one hope of having an acceptable life after the war was their government, which was thrown out because of the power that later brought them down again. The terms of the Treaty of Versailles led to the downfall of Germany, twice, unfairly so. Oscar Wilde said "One should always play fairly when one has the winning cards," and in no way was the Treaty of Versailles fair.
