up a good point, "Why do so many Americans choose to live their life in stupidity?" If watching television engages your mind less that other task why do it? In American society the television is used when a person has nothing else to do. Instead of doing nothing at least they are still engaging their mind in something. The television is here to stay because it a means for entertainment when there is no other.
