Introduction: The concept of Sustainable Development gained prominence in 1987 with the publication of the Brundtland Report: "Our Common Future", according to which: 'Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future.' This report was produced by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) set up by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1983 (Common, 1995).
