Frederick Douglass's autobiography is a piece of writing that really lets people in our day of age how horrible society was back before the Civil War. Many slaves were too afraid to reveal how they were treated because they didn't want to face the consequences. Also, almost all the slaves did not know how to read and write, so they were unable to share the information on the harshness of slavery.
