Now they are mainly used to hold music, data or computer software. DVD technology now has the potential to store up to 17 gigabytes, as oppose to the 714 megabytes CD's can hold (a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes, so a DVD could hold 18000 mb while a CD could hold 714mb). In a few years DVD technology will most probably have taken over the role of CD's and they will become obsolete.
