Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1820. She and her parents worked as slaves at the Brodas plantation. Harriet was hired out as a laborer by the age of five.
She was routinely beaten by her masters. When she was fifteen years old, Harriet tried to help a runaway slave. Someone oversaw her and hit her in the head with a lead weight, which put her into a coma.

In 1896, she purchased land to build a home for needy or sick blacks, but she was unable to raise the money for the house and gave the land to the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The home was completed by the church in 1908, and Harriet moved there a few years later. She spent her last years in the home telling the story of her life. Harriet died of pneumonia on March 10, 1813, at the age of 93.
