In Northwest Spain, lies the small region of Galicia. Known as the "land of 1000 rivers," it has waterways that flow all throughout, from its mountainous inland to the coast. The region's culture clearly shows its Celtic and Gaelic origins, which is the reason why it is often called the "Spanish Ireland." Its first language, Galician, is closer to Portuguese than Spanish.

three years after Spain obtained its own constitutional monarchy, Galicia received a pre-autonomy regime, and became officially an Autonomous Community by Organic Law on April 6, 1981. Under the still-existent parliament and President Manuel Fraga Iribarne, Galicia has shaped into the prosperous region it is today.
Despite and because of Galicia's tumultuous history and location, it has developed into a unique and industrially important Spanish region. It has importance to Spain and the rest of the world.
