Race, religion, and other differences always have and probably always will create difficulties in our society. By examining past mistakes, we can hope to discern how best to attack today's issues. In the wake of September 11, Arabs living in America face profiling and often discrimination. Blacks also still feel the effects of racist attitudes lingering from the time of slavery.

plenty of laws are on book that prevent discrimination. These must continue to be enforced. What really must change, however, are the attitudes. If people still harbor prejudices, consciously or not, no law can fully put an end to discrimination.
The administration must put forth and example by appointing the most qualified individuals, white, black, man, or woman to important positions. There cannot be a change in actions until there is a change in attitude.
