The excess amounts of these antibiotics have caused many bacteria to produce strains that are resistant to antibiotics (Nicolaou). During the last decade, there has been a shocking increase in the appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria because of an increased use of antibiotics combined with the extraordinary ability of bacteria to develop resistance.
